Adamawa, Plateau, and Nasarawa state governments have pardoned 24 prison inmates in commemoration of the 63rd independence anniversary.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State pardoned three inmates, namely Zaro Boniface, Luka Grastone, and Alhaji Jauro Banyi, who were serving prison sentences in the Numan correctional facility.
He also approved the commutation of the death sentence for one prisoner, Jibrilla Usman, from the old custodial centre in Yola.
The governor took the decision following the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy and in line with the powers conferred on him under Section 212(i) (d) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, said all necessary legal formalities have been completed with the correctional institutions.
Similarly, Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has pardoned a prisoner in the state serving a life jail term, while the judgements of others were reviewed.
The governor, who stated this yesterday in a statewide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary, said he applied his prerogative of mercy as the governor to review the prisoners’ sentences following the recommendations of the Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
“Danladi Musa who was sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Culpable Homicide and having served 17 years is granted absolute pardon. Tali Zingtim who was sentenced to death by hanging for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery will serve 21 years imprisonment.
“Ponzing Nanshep, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide will serve 21 years imprisonment. Dauda Joshua, who was sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide will serve life imprisonment,” he said.
Mutfwang said though the state has suffered some setbacks in recent times, his administration is determined to turn the tide and match to greatness.
In a similar vein, the Nasarawa State governor, Abdullahi Sule, announced the pardon of 20 prison inmates, in line with the constitutional provision as well as the prerogative of mercy.
Governor Sule made the announcement in a broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 63rd independence anniversary and 27th anniversary of the creation of the state.
The governor also announced the increment of the state’s cash transfer scheme from N5,000 to N7,500 monthly for poor families.
He restated the commitment of his administration to channel enormous resources towards enhancing the educational sector.
“Similarly, we have employed about 3,500 teachers in our state secondary schools. We also employed additional teaching and non-teaching staff in our state tertiary institutions. This is geared towards enhancing the educational development of our dear state,” he said.
