Ten writers have been selected for the Longlist James Currey Prize for African Literature in 2023.
The head of the jury, writer-journalist Henry Akubuiro, stated that the finalists were chosen from “80 entries from African writers spread across East, West, Central, and Southern Africa, of which 51 that met the rules progressed to the assessment stage.”
He further said; “A shortlist of 5 will be announced on August 20, 2023, while the winner will be declared on September 3, 2023, in Oxford at the James Currey Literary Festival, taking place from September 1-3, 2023.”

The 10-title longlist for the 2023 James Currey Prize for African Literature features works by Limpho Sechele’s Black Fractures in Exile, G.A. Agambila’s Bolga by Bus, and Oluwaseun’s The Night Wing. Girl Generation by Zainab Suileman, A Dangerous Job for a Woman by Pat Brickhill, Kindred Beyond by Chidubem Iweka, Beatrice Wende The Remnant by Tariro Ndoro, Ominla by Olatobosun Taofeek, Akala by William Moore, and Azogini by Chuks Iloegbunam.
