A magistrate’s court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sentenced a 19-year-old man, Adeola Saheed, to jail for attempting to rape a 35-year-old woman.

Earlier, the defendant was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, indecent assault and attempt to rape.

The prosecutor, Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that the defendant on October 12, 2023, at about 12pm at the Olomore Housing Estate in Abeokuta, conspired with one other person (at large) to commit to rape the woman.

He explained that the defendant ran into the complainant’s compound with a plank and a screwdriver, pretending to be chasing a thief.

He further said, “When he got to the compound, he saw the complainant washing clothes outside her house and asked if she saw any one that ran into her compound and whether she was the only one in the compound.

“The complainant, on replying to the convict that she was the only one in the compound and that she did not see any one run into her compound, picked her phone and tried calling her husband, when the defendant attacked her.

“Immediately, the defendant attacked her with the plank, strangled her neck and tore her clothes in an attempt to rape her, but fortunately the husband of the complainant came to her rescue.”

The Magistrate, Mrs O O Odumosu, convicted the defendant and sentenced him to six months in prison on each of the counts with an option of a N300,000 fine.
