I’ll be independent as Edo governor – PDP candidate

Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, has pledged to remain independent-minded if elected.

His statement comes amid accusations from opposition parties that the current governor, Godwin Obaseki, is attempting to secure a third term by installing Ighodalo as his successor. Additionally, some within his own party have alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is merely a puppet for former governor and current senator, Adams Oshiomhole.

But speaking on a Channels Television programme on Monday, Ighodalo emphasised his intention to navigate his leadership autonomously.

“I will be a man of my own,” he stated.

“I have been independent since I was 18, raised by my parents to make my own decisions and pursue my path,” he added.

Ighodalo acknowledged the importance of seeking advice, despite his commitment to independence.

He added, “Throughout my life, whether as a lawyer, businessperson, or boardroom executive, I have relied on mentors whose guidance I respected.

“Even in my political career so far, I have conferred with different people, including political leaders in the state across all parties, many in the PDP, some in other parties.

“I have talked to some of my friends who were governors years ago and who worked in the presidency years ago. So, I will always seek advice so that I can avoid the mistakes that many have made. It is important.”

“While I will make my own decisions, I recognise the value of advice from those with relevant experience. It would be unwise not to seek counsel from those who have navigated similar challenges.”
