Ten persons have been confirmed dead following a fatal accident in Kwara State involving a bus and a truck.

Daily Trust gathered that the bus was on its way to Sokoto while the truck was heading to Lagos when the accident took place claiming 10 lives.

The incident occurred around 6:40 am on Monday along the Olooru – Okoolowo axis involving a Volvo truck and a Toyota Hiace bus.

Twenty persons, 15 males, four females and one child were involved in the crash.

Those who lost their lives include five women, four men and a child, while the remaining 10 persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident happened when the driver of the truck with three people heading to Lagos from the north made a dangerous overtaking, which led to a head-on collision with the Sokoto State-bound bus with 17 passengers said to be on its way from Lagos.

The state commandant of the FRSC, Stephen Dawulung, confirmed the incident.

He attributed the cause to wrongful overtaking by the driver of the truck, which led to the head-on collision with the bus.

He also said the injured victims have been taken to General Hospital, Ilorin while the bodies of the dead were deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH morgue.

Dawulung, who said a full investigation is still ongoing to further ascertain details of the crash, also noted that the command “Deeply sympathised with families of the dead and wished the injured victims’ quick recovery”.

He admonished drivers to avoid wrongful overtaking and excessive speeding, which he listed as two main causes of road crashes in the country.

Our correspondent reports that this is the second time within a week that passengers perished following a head-on collision between a truck and a bus in the state. Last week Tuesday, a similar accident along Bode Saadu-Ilọrin axis in Moro Local Government Area claimed 11 lives with seven persons injured.
