Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen has promised that the 10th House will enact more legislation that would address the root causes of security challenges in Nigeria and strengthen the capacity of Nigeria’s Armed Forces to respond to the challenges.

In a statement on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi stated that he made the pledge while declaring open a two-day post-inauguration retreat for members of the House Committee on Defence, which was jointly organised by the Committee and the National Defence College in Abuja.

He said that security is one of the priority areas highlighted in the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House, adding that it is a collective responsibility to ensure that Armed Forces and police are well-equipped and adequately funded to tackle multiple security challenges facing Nigeria.

Abbas emphasised that legislators have a critical role in ensuring that necessary legislative frameworks are in place to support national security architecture through robust legislations that address root causes of security challenges.

The speaker said the 10th House will continue to support the efforts of security agencies through adequate funding, provision of modern equipment, ramping up training, and improving welfare packages for security personnel.

“The Legislative Agenda of the House, which I unveiled on Tuesday, 14th November 2023, highlights security and states our commitment to adopting legislative measures to improve national security”, he said.

The Committee Chairman, Babajimi Benson expressed concern about current security challenges in Nigeria.

He assured Nigerians that they were determined to carry out their legislative functions effectively, efficiently and in a manner that ensures safety of lives and property.
