Residents of Kuka community in Ashara ward of Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory have decried lack of drinking water in the community, saying they share the only available source of water with cows.
Some of the residents, mostly women, who spoke with Abuja Metro on Saturday, said lack of portable water had been their major challenge over the years, adding that they often trek to the stream to scoop water for domestic use.
Mrs Gladys Ezekiel, who spoke with our reporter at the stream, said she often woke up as early as 4am to the pond and waited for the water to gather before she could fetch.
She said despite all these, the herders still come around with their cows to drink from the same pond.

“The herders will still come with their cows to drink from the same pond and nobody can challenge them because we are afraid of what happened in Riwaza village,” she said.
Another resident, identified Mama Azumi, said the only borehole in the community had broken down for several years without any effort by the authorities of the council to repair it or sink another one.
“There is a hand dug borehole in the community but it has since broken down for some years now. The community has been pleading for the repair of the borehole, but there has not been a positive response from the area council,” she said.
The youth leader of the community, Musa Gwatana, told Abuja Metro that he had written several letters to the council authorities on the directive of the village chief on the need for them to fix the faulty borehole.
The youth leader, therefore, appealed to the authorities of the council to come to the aid of the community by fixing the faulty borehole or drill another one to tackle the perennial water problem facing the community.
