The chairman of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, has warned that primary school teachers in the nation’s capital are not slaves to the area council chairmen as they are probably assuming.
Shafas was speaking with our reporter at the Teachers’ House in Gwagwalada on Wednesday, while reacting to an alleged move by the six area council chairmen under the umbrella of ALGON to sue the National Salaries, Wages and Incomes Commission for capturing teachers for the minimum wage arrears.
He said, “Let them go to court, that will not stop the union from fighting for the rights of teachers, which they must give us.”
He said despite meeting with the six area council chairmen about three to four times, no positive outcome has been achieved yet.

He said the council chairmen have failed to show any sign of seriousness since the strike commenced and advised them to tell the union their position on the teachers’ demands.
“Remember that another new minimum wage is coming again, which may worsen the problem. They should better start attending to our demands one after the other,” he added.
He said it would be wrong for the union to call off the strike when there are no meaningful moves by the council chairmen to address their demands.
