Vigilantes trail kidnappers, rescue 2 victims in Kogi

Some vigilantes trailed and rescued two persons, Saidu Aliyu and Usman Ibrahim, who were abducted by gunmen at Akyara community in Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi State.

A resident of the community, simply identified as Shuaibu, said the incident happened on Friday, around 9:34am when the victims went to the farm with tricycle to load charcoal.

The victims were busy loading charcoal when the gunmen carrying weapons suddenly appeared and whisked them away.

He said another farmer, who was working in his farm sighted the gunmen and went back and alerted the vigilantes, who went after the gunmen.

According to him, the kidnappers upon sighting the vigilante started shooting at them and there was a shootout.

He said the kidnappers later fled and abandoned their victims.

A member of the vigilante, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying the gunmen abandoned their victims after they were overpowered during a gun duel.

The spokesman of Kogi State police command, DSP Williams Ovye Aya, was yet to pick calls or reply to text messages sent to him to confirm the incident, at press time.
