The University of Uyo has tasked its new doctors to uphold the principles of the medical career as they venture into practice.
Speaking at the weekend in Uyo during the 20th oath-taking ceremony of 43 medical graduands of the College of Health Sciences, Vice Chancellor of Uniuyo, Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, said doctors had the power to heal or harm the patients.
The VC urged the doctors to maintain the highest level of ethics and professionalism demanded of them and to take the oath seriously.
“As medical professionals, you are entrusted with the lives of your patients and your actions have the power to heal or harm. Therefore, I urge you not only to take this oath seriously, but also to be committed to upholding its principles throughout your medical career.

“Always act in the best interest of your patients and prioritise their well-being above everything else. Remember that you are not just treating a disease, but also caring for persons who may be in their most vulnerable state.
“I would also like to emphasise the importance of lifelong learning. Medicine, like most other fields, is a constantly evolving field, and it is imperative that you stay up to date with the latest research findings and developments.
“Keep an open mind and be willing to adopt and adapt to new ideals and techniques as they arise. This will ensure that you provide your patients with the best possible care,” he stated.
Speaking before leading the new doctors to take the oath, Registar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi said the increased admission quota for the college from 50 to 150 was a call for greater responsibility by the institution.
Sanusi encouraged the Vice Chancellor to situate the college within the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) to enable the students easily access practical training and make the college quasi-autonomous.
He further stated that it was also an opportunity for the UUTH to upscale its facilities to accommodate more doctors for housemanship.
On his part, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Enobong Ikpeme, commended the vice chancellor and his management team for supporting the college and ensuring the reaccreditation of the MBBS programme.
“As soon as you came on board, you met face to face with the daunting task of reaccreditation of the MBBS programme. You not only succeeded in doing this but you also succeeded in getting our quota increased from fifty (50) to one hundred and fifty (150) by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
“This is going to afford us the opportunity to train more medical doctors from this extraction,” he stated.
