The rescheduled inauguration of the tenth legislature of the Ogun State House of Assembly will be held today (Tuesday) amid growing tension and uncertainty.

Daily Trust reports that the inauguration slated for Tuesday, June 13, was postponed abruptly after failure to reach consensus on the candidate anointed by Governor Dapo Abiodun as the next speaker.

Abiodun backed the immediate past speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, to be re-elected as the leader in the tenth legislature.

Oluomo, currently in court for allegedly diverting N2.5 billion belonging to the assembly, is being battled for the seat by the former deputy speaker, Oludaisi Elemide.

Although the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has a majority of 17 seats against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)’s nine members-elect, insiders said the APC members-elect are averse to Oluomo’s return as the speaker.

Sources within the ruling party said the inauguration was postponed to allow the governor appeal to aggrieved APC members-elect.

However, it was gathered that the governor met with the members-elect and insisted on Oluomo as the next speaker.

However, it was not clear if the APC members-elect would vote Oluomo in today’s inauguration or not.

But PDP members-elect said they are not interested in who becomes the speaker of the house.

They also warned against turning Ogun into Nasarawa State where assembly’s leadership crisis was recorded last week.

A member-elect, Olalekan Adeleye (PDP- Odogbolu), said the postponement was not the best way to start the present legislature.

He said, “There have been rumours that Ogun State wants to go the way of Nasarawa State. But that can’t be our own Ogun State. Ogun State is sophisticated and I am sure the governor, Dapo Abiodun, is a gentleman and he wouldn’t want to take us back to the old days.”
