An Abuja Grade 1 Area Court in Karmo has ordered that two truck assistants be given six strokes of the cane for stealing 189 cans of beverage drinks valued at N13, 600.
Mohammed Musa, 30, and Abdullahi Mohammed, 20, all of Nigeria Bottling Company, Idu Plant, Abuja, were on Thursday convicted for joint act and theft.
The judge, Abubakar Sadiq, gave the order after the convicts pleaded guilty to the two count charge preferred against them.
Sadiq ordered that they should be given six strokes of the cane while the recovered items should be returned to the owners.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mrs Florence Auhioboh, told the court that one Michael Festus of Halogen Security Company, Abuja, arrested and brought the convicts to the Life Camp Police Station on Feb. 4.
Auhioboh said Festus, who was a security guard at the Nigeria Bottling Company, Idu Plant, Abuja, caught the convicts with 189 pieces of 35cl plastic Sprite valued at N13, 600 on the said date.
The prosecutor said the convicts made a confessional statement and the drinks were recovered during police investigations.
She told the court that the offence contravened sections 79 and 289 of the penal code. (NAN)
