The Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, yesterday said that tertiary institutions in Nigeria are yet to profess national unity and social cohesion.

He cited the appointment of Indigenous Vice-Chancellors to forsee the affairs of federal and state government- owned universities as critical errors that does not augur well for the advancement of nationalism.

Delivering the 4th convocation lecture of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, with the theme: ‘The Role of the Academia in Nation-Building and National Integration in Nigeria’, he noted that the existing 172 universities cross the 36 states including Abuja had only succeeded in creating manpower, leaving other critical sectors like the economy untouched.

His words;  “today even federal universities are succumbing to the agitations for Indigenes to occupy the highest positions in their management unlike what was obtainable before and after the Nigerian civil war and such omen does not mean well for our nationality.

“It is sad to say that tertiary education institutions in Nigeria are tragically yet to be the incubators of national unity and social cohesion”.
