The Chairman of Ussa LGA of Taraba State, Abershi Musa, has resigned his position over the failure of the Taraba State Government to stop the killing of people in the local government by suspected herdsmen.

Musa specifically accused Governor Darius Ishaku of failure to take action on the killing of people in Ussa LGA.

Musa’s resignation was contained in a letter dated March 5, 2023, which he addressed to Gov Ishaku.

He told journalists that he resigned from office because he could not continue to see his people being killed on a daily basis without any action taken by Governor Ishaku who was the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the state.

He further said, “The action of Governor Darius Ishaku over the killing of my people in Ussa LGA by herdsmen is the reason why I have tendered my resignation letter as a caretaker chairman of the local government.”

He claimed that he drew the attention of the governor to the killings on telephone and also presented the case to the governor during a security meeting, but that no action was taken by the state government to stop the killings.

Musa, while disclosing that this week alone 15 people were killed in the area, said the palace of Kwe Ando Madugu, the third class Chief of Lisam, was destroyed by youths who thought that the chief and himself (Musa) had the capacity to stop the killings but failed to do anything.

He said, “You are aware that the paramount ruler of Lisam Chiefdom was attacked and his palace burnt down by youths because they think the chief and myself are not doing enough to stop the killings going on the area.”

He revealed that stakeholders in the area were discussing on how to stop the killings.

He further said, “I wish to appeal to the people of Ussa LGA to remain calm and distance themselves from any action that could spark more trouble in the area.”

But reacting, the Senior Assistant to Governor Darius Ishaku on Media and Publicity, Mr Bala DanAbu, said the resignation of Musa was a political blackmail.

He said Ishaku had always been very active on the issue of security and had tackled similar issues with all seriousness.

He further said, “Though the Ussa LGA chairman has the right to resign from his position, but it is wrong to accuse the governor of refusing to address the insecurity in that area, because right now action is being taken to address the Ussa killings.”
