Policeman arrested for assaulting man over N5,000 bail in Imo

Constable detained a widow and demanded N10,000 for her freedom

A policeman in Imo has been arrested for brutalising a man at Anara Divisional Police headquarters  in Isiala Mbano local government area over N5,000 bail demand.

Chidiebere Azutalam was at the station to seek bailout of a widow, Akudo Chimezie, arrested by the policeman.

The policeman, identified as a constable, had held the widow in custody and demanded  N10,000 from her for her freedom.

The widow was said to have contacted the victim who is her relative to seek her bailout.

The victim, said that he pleaded with  the constable to take N5,000 and release his relative, an appeal that infuriated the policeman, leading to an altercation

Divisional Police Officer was however said to be returning from Owerri, where he attended the Commissioner of police weekly briefings, when he was contacted about the development in his jurisdiction

The DPO was said to have ordered the arrest of the policeman, pending investigations.

The Police Public Relations Officer SP Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the story saying that the errant officer has been arrested and detained pending investigations and possible disciplinary actions against him.
