Joint security forces involving the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) yesterday took over the Ogun State House of Assembly’s complex in Abeokuta, following the impeachment of Speaker Olakunle Oluomo.

Daily Trust reports that Olumo, representing Ifo I Constituency, was impeached on Tuesday, during plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi.

He was impeached due to allegations of gross misconduct, which bordered on high handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance and poor leadership style, financial misappropriation and inciting members against themselves.

In his stead, the Assembly elected Oludaisi Elemide (Odeda Constituency), a loyalist of former Governor Olusegun Osoba, as the new speaker.

A member representing Yewa North 1, Adegoke Adeyanju, moved the motion for the speaker’s impeachment while it was seconded by Ademola Adeniran (Sagamu II constituency).

Daily Trust gathered that Adeyanju had entered the assembly chamber with the Maze in company of other lawmakers.

Our correspondent who visited the assembly complex at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, reported that shortly after news of the impeachment filtered in, security forces stormed the assembly complex.

The main entrance of the assembly was blocked with a security van, which prevented vehicular movement into and exit the complex.

But there was a drama when some of the security agents forced one of the lawmakers, Adeyanju, to open his car for a search within the assembly complex.

The CP while speaking with newsmen admitted that a search was conducted on Awoso’s vehicle but said nothing was found.

Meanwhile, the impeached speaker, Oluomo failed to respond to several calls put through his mobile phone for reaction as of the time of this report.

But speaking to newsmen after being elected as the new speaker, Elemide said Governor Dapo Abiodun was not behind the impeachment saga.

Our correspondent reports that both Oluomo and Elemide had earlier contested for the speakership and it took the intervention of the governor who persuaded Elemide to quit the race before Oluomo could be re-elected in June.

Daily Trust reports that a former Deputy Speaker of the House, Oludare Kadiri had later dragged Oluomo before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraud. The case landed Oluomo in court where he is currently facing N2.5billion corruption charges bordering on alleged diversion of the assembly’s funds.
