Over 500 golfers across Nigeria and neighbouring Ghana are taking part in this year’s IBB International Golf and Country Club’s championship to celebrate Nigeria’s 62nd Independence anniversary.
Addressing the press yesterday in Abuja, the Chairman of the Organising Committee and vice-captain of IBB Golf and Country Club, Dr. Olabanjo Obaleye, said the tournament which commenced on Sunday, September 25 will end on Saturday October 1.
He said “It takes the grace of God for us to be together as a nation. There is hope for Nigeria and when there is hope, you have to continue working and seeking positive ways to make Nigeria better.
“Everywhere across the world, there are ups and downs so Nigeria is not an exception. So, this celebration is to bring together all golfers across Nigeria to enjoy and celebrate our anniversary.
“We started this event on Sunday, September 25 with match play between the international community and Nigerian community. Yesterday (Wednesday) we had the pro, staff and Caddies and tomorrow (today), there will be a Match Play between Nigeria and Ghana.
“Meanwhile, on Friday, golfers with handicap 19 and above, sponsors and corporate organisations will take to the course while the grand finale will be on Saturday, October 1.”
The vice-Chairman of the organising committee, Ibrahim Babayo, also said “In spite of several challenges, Nigeria is 62 years and it is a milestone worthy of celebration. So, Nigerian golfers and the international community will be at IBB Golf and Country Club to celebrate this success and to thank the almighty for His continued grace.”
The organisers have said apart from different prizes to be won, the star prize will be a jacket and a giant trophy for the overall winner of the tournament.
