Residents of Ede in Osun State have denounced the age-long practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) due to its harmful effects.

This was just as the state government was collaborating with law enforcement agents and other partners to prosecute perpetrators of FGM.

City & Crime reports that Osun State tops the lists of states with a high prevalence of FGM in the South West until recently that the state moved against the practice, supported by UNFPA through Action Health Incorporated (AHI) which champions the advocacy to end FGM, that the rate of the practice reduced to 45.9 per cent from 77.6 per cent.

The AHI Programme Officer, Fatimah Idris, urged law enforcement agents to support community leaders and ensure the protection of the identity of reporters of FGM cases, as well as prosecution of perpetrators.
