The outgoing Vice-Chancellor of Bingham University Karu, Prof. Williams Qurix, says non-interference by the higher authorities and team work are parts of the reasons he was able to stabilise the varsity and propel it to success.

The Vice chancellor stated during the commissioning of over N2.6billion projects in the school premises on Friday.

Prof. Qurix , who served the varsity for six years, commissioned the projects, which include the University Senate building which cost N1.9 billion, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences tagged at N195 million, Faculty of Administration building at N190 million and Centre for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership Studies at the cost of N200 million.

Others are Multi-Users Laboratory at the cost of N90 million, expansion of Faculty of Law Library with N29 million and two Sit-out projects for students relaxation and reading at the cost of N41 million.

The outgoing VC said when he took over the affairs of the varsity, “We didn’t have all the resources but in some cases just very little resources but with teamwork we are able to achieve much. You cannot succeed as a vice chancellor if you don’t have a team to work with.

“Sometimes as a vice chancellor you have challenges and you have your own idea and the way you want to go, but if there is interference from the higher authorities you are not able to do it. For me, there was no interference in my own case and I was able to chart my own course.”

On challenges he encountered, he said funding was an issue when he took over.

“There was a huge debt, which was about N10 billion with interest making it about N13 billion on ground but now, we have paid N10 billion of the debt.”

“We also had security challenges that people were worried for us but we were able to surmount them and infrastructural challenges as well, we still have, but we have substantially reduced it, fortunately we are on better latitude now,” he said.

He, however, advised the incoming vice chancellor to not seek to reinvent the wheel but rather seek to build on what had been done and where necessary establish his own foundation so that he can build.

The new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Kuje Ayuba, is expected to take over from January 8, 2024.
