The Federal Government has disclosed that 489 Nigerians have so far died of Type C Meningitis.
The Minister of State for Health, Osagie Ehinare, disclosed this to State House reporters on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council meeting.
"As of now, there has been 4,637 suspected cases of which we have had 489 fatalities and of these, 207 have been confirmed in laboratory tests," the minister said.
Ehinare, who noted that about 70 percent of the cases recorded so far were in Zamfara State, said the situation was being managed.
The minister said the vaccination team would move to Sokoto in few days’ time to control the situation there.
"As of now, I can say the epidemic is no more rising, and we hope it’ll come down soon. By this weekend, we’re expecting 823,000 vaccines from the United Kingdom, approved by the World Health Organisation; a special kind of vaccine called the conjugate vaccine which has a longer protection," he said.
