Man bags 4 months for stealing suit

A 29-year-old man, Olu Gbenga, has been sentenced to four months imprisonment by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court, over an alleged   stealing of a suit jacket.

The convict, Olu Gbenga of Bus Terminal, Old Garage, Ado Ekiti, was said to have stolen one jacket valued at N80, 000.00 that was spread on the rope, property of Babatunde Bagilaje.

 Police prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 302 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

 He said the complainant spread his suit jacket and trousers on the rope in front of his house but could not find them in the evening.

He added that on March 19, the complainant found the defendant wearing the suit along Ilawe Road, adding that he initially denied but the complainant took him to his community with the help of some passersby. 

 The prosecutor said, “The complainant showed him the jacket’s trousers and he confessed to have stolen it when he came to paint a house in the neighborhood and he was later handed over to the police.’’

The prosecutor called one witness and tendered the jacket, statements of the defendant and the complainant as exhibits while the defendant who had earlier pleaded guilty prayed the court to temper justice with mercy. 

In his judgment, Magistrate Oluwasanmi Bakole said, “I am under no doubts whatsoever that the accused actually executed the act complained of and positively admits the same.

 “I find him culpable and the accused is hereby sentenced to four months custodial term with hard labour at the Federal Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, commencing from March 21, 2024.
