South African artiste, Tyla, real name Laura Seethal, won the Best New Artiste and Best International Act awards at the BET Awards on Sunday night.

Tyla was nominated for Best New Artiste alongside Nigerian singer, Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr.

In the Best international act category, the South African was nominated with popular Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Ahmed Ololade aka Asake.

While accepting the Best International Act Award, Tyla said: “I did not prepare anything but I just wanna say thank you so much to my tigers, my family, my team.

“Thank you to BET for always pushing the culture, I’m gonna be performing soon, so get ready.”

This is not the first time Tyla would be defeating Nigerian musicians at the global stage.

In February, Daily Trust had reported how she emerged victorious at the Grammys 2024, clinching the inaugural Best African Music Performance award for her viral song “Water”.

Facing fierce competition from Nigerian heavyweights like Davido, Arya Starr, and Burna Boy, Tyla’s victory stirred controversy among Nigerians, who expressed their dissatisfaction on social media.

The historic win not only places Tyla in the spotlight but also makes her one of the youngest African artistes to clinch a Grammy at 22.
