Ibadan mayhem: Makinde begs traders, assures them of justice

The crisis was said to have been triggered following an altercation between Rahmon,

The Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Thursday appealed to traders in Iwo-road to allow police do their job over the death of the son of the owner of the Iwo-road complex in Ibadan, the state capital.

Two persons were reportedly killed during a clash between shop owners and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on Wednesday.

The crisis was said to have been triggered following an altercation between Rahmon, the son of the owner of the shopping complex and NURTW members.

The drivers were said to have parked their vehicles in front of the shopping complex which prevented visitors and shop owners from parking there.

The altercation degenerated and Rahmon and one other person were killed.

Arriving at the scene amidst the heavy presence of armed policemen, soldiers, NSCDC officials and Amotekun, Makinde was severally interjected by the aggrieved youths.

While addressing the angry traders, he said the case would be investigated but appeal to the traders to allow the police to investigate the case.

He asked the traders to select two persons who would represent them and tell the government their grievances

One of the traders who refused to mention his name told Daily Trust that the armed drivers who they said killed Rahmon and looted their shops after vandalising the shopping complex was led by a prominent leader among the park managers. He said the hoodlums returned on Thursday morning and looted more shops.

One of the telephone sellers, who identified himself as Akeem Alatise told our correspondent that “They stole everything in my shop just like they did to other shops.”

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State on Thursday blasted Governor Makinde for the recent security killings in the state.

The party, which said the governor did not prepare for leadership, cautioned him not to return the state to the era of brigandage.

This was contained in a statement signed by its spokesman, Dr AbdulAzeez Olatunde and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Ibadan.

The APC, which urged the governor, to learn from the eight peaceful years of Sen. Abiola Ajimobi’s administration condemned the violence unleashed on innocent traders and passersby at the Iwo road axis of Ibadan, describing it as barbaric and wicked.
