The Fulbe Development and Cultural Organisation (FUDECO) has said it is set to provide the necessary support on utilising modern tools in improving pastoralism, protecting pastoralists’ livelihood and enhancing access to modern standards of living.

The National Chairman of FUDECO, Professor Sarli Saadou Nana, who disclosed this at the fourth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the group in Kano, said the gathering was geared towards “addressing strict policy-driven, as against the common reactionary approaches, and our model of implementation is primarily based on enlightening and empowering the community to have the capacity to be self-dependent and self-sufficient by empowering pastoralists, preventing and managing communal conflicts.

“We are working with pastoralists to promote and protect their rights to equal citizenship and participation in decision making, supporting pastoralists to have access to facilities and infrastructure such as water, health and veterinary services, and also supporting victims of conflicts.

“We are so far trying on promoting education, literacy, numeracy, information, advice and guidance, protecting the rights, dignity, respect and integrity of pastoralists and working with other organisations and institutions to advocate for peace among the pastoralists and other communities.

“We shall enhance pastoralism in Nigeria and across Africa to modern standards, which in turn, will provide the economic resources necessary for the development of the pastoralist communities.

“Our watchwords are ‘peace through dialogue’. We dearly hold the notion of liberty of all communities and individuals, strongly believing in cooperation and collective development. Like other peoples, the individual and collective human rights of the pastoralists should be protected in the most civil ways possible. We do our work with credibility, competence, transparency, accountability, participation of all. We treat people with dignity, equality and value diversity.”

The chief guest of the occasion, a former Governor of Bauchi State and one time National Chairman of the PDP, Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu, said, “Please, let’s unite ourselves, there is too much to complain about and it will not take us anywhere. We must come out with laudable programmes that will help us and enrich us more.

“You must put it to yourself that you are blessed. What are you doing to bring blessing to the one behind you without recourse to compensation.”
