Gunmen at the weekend killed an ex-deputy rector of a polytechnic and a local government council spokesman in Okpokwu and Ukum LGAs of Benue State respectively.

Our correspondent reports that while the former Deputy Rector of the Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, Oche Enenche, was gunned down at Odobo in Okpokwu LGA, the ex-Information Officer of Ukum LGA, Orbunde Ephraim, was killed at his home in Ukum.

The Chairman of Okpokwu LGA, Mrs Amina Audu, told our correspondent on telephone that the ex-deputy rector was driving in his car with his wife when gunmen blocked them and opened fire on them, killing him on the spot.

Mrs Audu explained that, “It was a case of either kidnapping or armed robbery. It happened on Friday not up to 30 minutes after I drove on the same spot. Someone called me that they had killed a man who was in a car with his wife and that they kidnapped the woman.

“But security men who were alerted swung into action and trailed the gunmen into the bush and they (gunmen) abandoned the woman. So she was rescued.”

Similarly, the immediate past Chairman of Ukum LGA, Steve Ayua, told journalists in Makurdi that, “I appointed him (Ephraim) Information Officer of Ukum LGA. He was shot last night and was taken to a private hospital. Unfortunately, he didn’t get prompt medical attention and eventually passed on. The killer casually strolled into his house in Zaki-Biam and shot him in the stomach.

Meanwhile, the police spokesman in the state, SP Catherine Anene, said she was yet to receive information about the incidents.
