Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has stressed the need for peaceful coexistence as a key factor in the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria.

Speaking at a meeting of former speakers of state assemblies in Yola, the governor called on all stakeholders to work together to combat the menace of insecurity and engender a peaceful nation.

He urged all Nigerians to appreciate each other and convert the country’s plurality into strength.

The governor also highlighted the important role the legislature plays in shaping and deepening democracy and good governance in Nigeria.

He urged former speakers to continue to work together towards a better and more prosperous Nigeria, and to champion the cause of peaceful coexistence, democracy, and good governance in the country.

He also tasked them to mentor and guide new legislators and advocate policies and programmes that promote economic growth and development.

A former chairman of the Conference of Former Speakers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria (COFSSHA), Senator Simon Bako Lalong, urged his colleagues to be active participants in the democratic process and work towards building a better Nigeria for all.

Lalong called on the former speakers to lend their voices and expertise to the national discourse on issues affecting the country and to encourage and mentor younger politicians.
