Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Doma United were involved in a fatal road accident yesterday morning while returning from Owerri, where they had honoured their NPFL/StarTimes Matchday 35 fixture against Heartland on Sunday.

The host won the battle of relegation-threatened teams 3-1 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium.

Therefore, it was double tragedy for Doma United as the bus that was conveying them back home somersaulted several times along the Makurdi-Lafia road.

Although no life was left in the unfortunate incident, the accident left some players and officials with different degrees of injuries while one official and player were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

According to an official who pleaded for anonymity, the accident occurred after the thoroughly fatigued driver dozed off on the wheels.

“I can tell you in confidence that the case of the accident was tiredness. After the match in Owerri, some of us suggested that the team should spend the night in Enugu and leave very early on Monday (yesterday) to beat the sit-at-home order in the Southeast.

“However, an official who is a relative of the owner of the club insisted that the team should continue with the journey.

“Unfortunately, the driver who didn’t have enough rest dozed off in the course of the journey, leading to the accident,” he said.
