In line with the strategy of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Family Planning (FP) 2030 agenda, the Community Oriented DMPA-SC/Self-Injection Acceleration in Nigeria (CODSAiN) and Self-Care Accelerator Project (S-CAP) has been launched.
While launching the project in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH), Dr Kehinde Osinowo, said the CODSAiN project aimed to reduce the unmet needs and missed opportunities for family planning through community scale-up of DMPA-SC and Self-Injection (SI) as a self-care measure and within the broader contraceptive method mix.
Osinowo said as a result of the success achieved through the Resilient Accelerated Scale-up of DMPA-SC Self-Injection in Nigeria (RASuDiN) project in 10 states, the Federal Ministry of Health approved the extension of the innovation to four new additional states, Gombe, Kano, Nasarawa and Yobe.

The Director, Reproductive Health at the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs Tinu Taylor, said the newly introduced DMPA-SC which was self-injection was a very good way to empower women to take their own health in their hands because they didn’t have to come to the health facility every day, noting that, “They can be given an extra dose and taught how to use it at home.”
Country Coordinator, John Snow Incorporated (JSI), Dr Adewole Adefalu, said Self-Care Accelerator Project (S-CAP) will empower women and men, families, and communities to carry out effective health actions, with or without support from healthcare providers.
