Benue to imortalise Gideon Orkar

Benue State has concluded plans to honour the late military officer, Gideon Orkar, who was executed over a failed coup by naming a 9.7 kilometre road after him.

The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mike Inalegwu, disclosed this while briefing journalists Tuesday after the state executives meeting at the Government House in Makurdi.

Orkar was a Nigerian military officer who staged a coup against the government of General Ibrahim Babangida on April 22, 1990. Orkar and other coconspirators were tried, convicted of treason and were executed.

Inalegwu also said Governor Samuel Ortom would not leave the state for the next six months after handing over power to the Governor-elect, Hyacinth Alia.

He intimated that the Contributory Pension Fund of the state had reached N6 billion and that fund managers would be established for the incoming administration to access the money for proper utilisation.

The commissioner further decried the incessant killings of rural dwellers by armed invaders as he condemned the latest killing of six people including a man, his wife and their three-month-old baby in the Adaka community of Makurdi LGA.
