Former senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has commended president Bola Tinubu for intervening in the disconnection feud between two telecom giants, MTN Nigeria and Globacom. Senator Bruce said the president’s intervention has brought a win-win solution for, not just the two telecom companies but also for Nigeria.
Recall that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had, on January 8th, 2024, published a pre-disconnection notice informing subscribers of the approval it earlier granted MTN to commence the phased disconnection of Globacom Limited with effect from January 18th, 2024. The reason for such disconnection included a long-standing interconnection debt dispute between the parties.
However, the disconnection would have had drastic implications for the consumers and seamless operation of the national telecoms network in Nigeria.
Wading into the matter, President Tinubu gave the parties 21 days grace period given to both parties to resolve the matter, resulting to both parties agreeing to resolve their differences.
Reacting to the agreement by both parties to resolve the dispute amicably and in ways beneficial to Nigeria and Nigerians, senator Murray-Bruce, in a statement on Thursday, commended president Tinubu, saying the resolution is “…the of having a business-minded leader in Aso Rock.”
He said with this resolution, the ease of doing business in Nigeria is further improved as “the country’s economy will benefit more from cooperation than from confrontation.”
His statement reads thus:
“I commend President Bola Tinubu, @officialABAT, for personally intervening in the misunderstanding between MTN and Glo and reaching a win-win resolution. A détente that is good for Nigeria and our telecommunications sector, as well as the leading corporations in that industry. This is the fruit of having a business-minded leader in Aso Rock.
Of particular note is the twenty one days grace period given to both parties. With this mindset, the ease of doing business in Nigeria is improved. Our economy will benefit more from cooperation than from confrontation, and I am glad that with this Nigeria-first initiative, we are moving from the battleground to common ground. Congratulations to @GloWorld and @MTNNG, and we are looking forward to better interconnectivity between the two behemoths.”
