The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has stressed the importance of research by universities and other tertiary institutions to tackle the challenges facing the country.

Barau spoke while hosting the management of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nasarawa State, led by the vice-chancellor, Professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed, at his office in Abuja.

Senator Barau said universities have roles to play in addressing the current challenges facing the country, and called on them to contribute their quota to the consolidation of democracy in the country.

He said, “Aside from training our young men and women, the universities and other institutions should embark on research to address our challenges. It’s one of the fundamentals of a viable country. Research work is lacking in our universities, and it is one of the fundamentals of resolving the challenges in our institutions.

“I’m happy that you set up the Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, to continue or to go into research about our democracy, to bring in innovations that will help to strengthen our democracy,” he said, assuring them of his full support and collaboration.’’
