The Police in Benue State have apprehended a total of 87 suspects from different locations of the state for various crimes bordering on armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping and rape.

State Commissioner of Police, Garba Mukaddas, stated yesterday that operatives of the command achieved the feat following several strategic measures evolved in recent times.

“During the period under review, a total of 87 were arrested, 45 of them are suspected cultists, 38 suspected armed robbers, and four suspected kidnappers, while 15 arms and ammunition were recovered,” he said.

Mukaddas in the statement made available to our correspondent in Makurdi by his Spokesperson, DSP Catherine Anene, urged members of the public to give useful information to security agencies to contain the level of crime in the state.

He explained that among the suspects was a kidnap/robbery syndicate which assembled at Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi, and was plotting to kidnap a businessman in the area.

He further disclosed that a team of police officers was immediately deployed to the scene where one Terseer Peter, Omochoko Aba, and Aondoakura Terna, all males of different addresses were arrested, while further investigation led to the arrest of the gang leader, Ameh Onuh Okpe, and a locally made pistol with live ammunition recovered.

The police commissioner also said that the command during the period under review received information that one Emeka Simon of Modern Market Road in Makurdi defiled his seven months old daughter and has been on the run to avoid arrest, but that he was arrested on June 2, 2020, by detectives at ‘D’ Division Police Station, Makurdi.
