The Managing Director of Kaduna State Environment and Property Agency, Alhaji Lawal Jibril, has advised butchers against the use of tyres in meat processing at abattoirs in the state.
Addressing leaders of butchers association at Makera Kakuri slaughterhouse as part of activities to mark World Environment Day Alhaji Lawal said most of them indulged in such practice which is detrimental to the health of consumers.
He said the action was also detrimental to the environment because of the pollution it generates.
“Using these old tyres to burn animal skin is dangerous to human lives. So also the fumes coming out does pollute the air which is also very dangerous to environment and health,” he said.
In his remarks, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mohammed Mahmoud Shuaibu said the theme of this year’s World Environment Day was “Beat Air Pollution’.
He said tyres were not meant to be used for that as the practice was injurious to the health of both the butchers and consumers
In their remarks, the leaders of the association thanked the agency for the sensitization, and promised to make sure their members desist from such practice.
