Strike: Education colleges re-strategise as 3-months ultimatum lapses

COEASU had on July 17th, suspended a seven-month old strike it embarked upon calling for better funding of colleges of education including improved staff welfare, after promise by government to address the issues.
National Secretary of the union Comrade Nuhu Ogirima told Daily Trust at the 4th biennial national conference of COEASU, held in Zuba, Abuja that the refusal of government to fulfil its agreement at this moment calls to question its sincerity in the first instance.
Ogrima noted that his members are re-strategizing on better ways of achieving their demands.
He said the myriad of challenges bedevilling the educational sector in the country is a result of lack of political will coupled with the nonchalant attitude of government towards the implementation of various policies and programmes.
The secretary cited the Benue state situation where the joint union of polytechnics are currently on strike due to government’s refusal to pay staff entitlement. He also mentioned Kaduna and Niger states as places where welfare policies of workers are yet to be implemented.
According to him, the choice of the theme of the conference “Education, Quality Assurance and National Integration” is to draw government’s attention to the need to address the nation’s challenges ranging from system decay, insecurity, infrastructure neglect, among others.
