Nigeria rejects UN pressure over anti-gay law

Wali expressed the displeasure of Nigeria when he received in audience the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights Ms Navi Pillay in Abuja yesterday.
The minister said homosexuality is against the culture and religious values of Nigeria and that citizen of the country would not to succumb to UN pressure.
He said: “Some of the issues that you raised, the issue of same sex marriage, we do not want it. And I think when you look at the culture of our people, 99% will not accept the same sex marriage. It is a reality. Nigeria is fundamentally a very, very religious society and our people cannot accept it.”
Earlier, the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navi Pillay said it will continue to pressure Nigeria to reverse the anti-gay law, arguing that that it contravened the fundamental human rights council of the UN. She said she came to Nigeria to pressure the government into reversing the law saying
“My concern is that it is the violation of law of human rights council enshrined in the government and the civil rights. It contravenes the African charter and the Nigeria constitution itself.”
