Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, while inaugurating the committee, challenged members to critically examine the issue of globalisation in arriving at a conclusion.
The committee which is expected to conclude its work in three months time, is in response to a strike action embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) workers that was called off last week after the intervention of Chief Wogu.
The union had protested the nature of Nigerian roads, saying it poses a threat to the survival of its members who die every day in preventable accidents. The union also wants the terms and agreements upon which outsourcing is done in the oil and gas sector of the country to be reviewed.
Terms of reference for the committee include, “reviewing existing MOUs on casualisation and contract staffing in the light of current realities as well as reviewing the outcome of the Stakeholders Forum held on 3rd and 4th March 2010, on the subject.
“Come up with guidelines to ensure unionisation and collective bargaining for the affected workers and to also proffer solutions to identified unfair labour practices in the sector.”
The committee is to be chaired by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Prof. Simon Ogamdi, with presidents of NUPENG, Comrade Igwe Achesi and his counterpart in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN), Comrade Babatunde Ogun, as members.
Also on the committee are representatives of the NNPC, DPR and others.
