Why we relocated polling units from private homes – Enugu REC

Onukagu said about 73 percent of the electorates in the state have received their permanent voters’ cards as against 63 percent last week.  He indicated that the commission might not achieve 100 percent distribution of PVCs in the state as some of the people who registered during the exercise in 2011, especially students of tertiary institutions, have left the state.
Addressing journalists in Enugu on Wednesday, the REC said lack of internal democracy and indiscipline in some political parties had caused violence in the build up to the elections and called on political parties to reach out to their aggrieved members in order to resolve their problems.
Onukagu did not give figures of polling units relocated from peoples’ residential areas to public places and did not mention the parts of the state affected in the exercise. But he insisted that INEC in the state had resolved to be fair and transparent during the polls.
He said: “Today, no INEC staff can condone or promote violence at his or her place of work. This has had a positive spin off on the ad-hoc staff who today are very electorate-friendly. In the coming elections, we are convinced beyond any doubt that no INEC staff, both permanent and ad-hoc, can be the source of violence. We will surely on our part deliver violence free elections.”
