The event began at the Faculty of Pharmacy with the pharmacy students all seemed prepared to create the necessary awareness to combat cancer.
The students held various card boards with different inscriptions about the disease.
The rally which lasted for over four hours saw the students visiting public places such as the Uselu market and secondary schools close to the Ugbowo campus of the university.
Addressing the market women at Uselu market, a 500-level pharmacy student, Kingsley Isibor, said many people were ignorant about cancer disease.
He spoke on the causes of cancer and how to prevent it, adding that early detection was the best way of tackling the sickness.
He added that the culture of eating fruits and desisting from alcohol intake will help sufferers fight the disease.
Kingsley implored the elderly women to always engage in light exercises like a brisk walk and avoid foods that are dangerous to their health.
Demonstrating to the women how to frequently carry out Breast Self-Examination BSF, ADMAP Chairperson Chinenye Ihejirika, encouraged the nursing mothers to breast feed their children for, at least, six months and above, saying this would reduce the risk of having breast cancer.
She explained that monthly breast check to determine if there is any swell or pain is necessary, advising that in a situation where there is, women should go to the hospital for proper check and confirmation.
She also encouraged the women to maintain a very good hygiene in the market place as dirtiness could be a precursor to many diseases and cancer may not be excluded.
Speaking at the event, the President of Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS) Darry Emazor said cancer has killed reputable Nigerians, citing example of the former Director General of NAFDAC Professor Dora Akunyili.
He said: “We should all try as much as possible to keep a date with our doctors because early detection of the ailment gives a better chance for survival.”
