Students protest turns sour in Abuja

A protest by students in Abuja over the recent termination of appointments of 12 vice chancellors by the federal government turned sour after some vehicles were damaged.
The protesters, under the umbrella of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) were against the sack of four out of the 12 VCs.
“The VCs have not completed their tenures and can only be dismissed from work by the university councils,” said NANS President, Tijjani Usman.
The protesters assembled near the ministry of education at the Federal Secretariat complex at about 12:30 noon on Thursday and disrupted vehicular movements.
A Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number FG 23 A31 allegedly belonging to the Niger Delta ministry had its windscreen smashed, an eyewitness said. Another vehicle was also damaged.
Police later intervened, teargased and arrested some of the students. Both the police and the ministry did not make any comment on the matter.
