95% Of our Schools Lack Fields For Sporting Facilities – Kwara Commission

The Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Bola Magaji, has advocated a legislation to make it mandatory for schools to have fields for sporting activities before they can be approved.

Magaji said this during day 2 of the third quarter review of the ministerial briefing held in Ilọrin, the state capital.

He said this is one of the problems facing sports in the state despite the renewed focus of the government on the sector.

According to him, “For some of us that went to school in the late 50s and 60s, we know the situation then as schools have field for sports. But I can assure you that 95 percent of schools in Kwara State now lack fields for sporting facilities and that is the problem that sport is having in the state.

“I went to Government Secondary School, Ilọrin, the only sporting facility we lacked then was that for swimming. But go there now, they have built houses on these fields. So solving the problem is a social responsibility for all of us. The state government is doing its best by providing the necessary facilities.

“Maybe there should be a recommendation that no school should be established without providing sporting facilities”, he said.

Speaking on the slow start of Kwara United to the league, the former squash champion said the team is making progress.

“Before the coming of this administration, Kwara united goes to relegation after every other season. But since this government took over in the last five years, that has not happened because of the efforts of the governor. And we are ready to consolidate on that”.

“Yes, we have not done too well to justify what the government is doing but that does not mean we are not performing. We have just played three matches and we will see the improvement in subsequent matches”, he submitted.

Similarly, Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KWGIS), ESV Abdulkareem Babatunde Sulyman, disclosed that 156 Certificates of Occupancy (CoOs) have been processed and duly signed by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for collection.

He said 398 Statutory Rights of Occupancy were produced for the production of Certificate of Occupancy, while 484 Survey Reports were processed for the production of Statutory Rights of Occupancy within the period.

“269 Titles Deed Plans were processed for the production of Certificates of Occupancy, while 156 Certificates of Occupancy were processed to the final stage and signed by the Governor now ready for collection.

He added that 12 Lands Registration Certificates were issued to applicants on their portions of land after meeting the necessary procedures for land registration.

ESV. Sulyman said that the ongoing reform and automation of land administration in the state has helped the agency to accelerate the process and boost the state’s internally generated revenue.

On his part, the Commissioner for Works, Abdulqawwiy Olododo, said 19,509 vehicles were impounded for expired licence and road unworthiness among other traffic offences.

This is just as the government has extended the operations of the Kwara State Road Traffic Agency (KWARMA) to Offa and is looking at other local governments.

Represented by Director Civil Engineering, Engr Moshood Akanbi, the commissioner said “100 electric vehicles are expected to complement the CNGs to reduce transportation cost in the state”.

According to him, properties “worth N17 billion were saved while over N17 million were destroyed in fire incidents since May”.

On her part, the Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Mrs Damilola Yusuf, said the state has gone into partnership for provision of electric powered tricycles.

Commissioner for Special Duties, Chief John Bello, who was represented by a permanent secretary, Alhaji Suleiman Tunde Salami, said the ministry has conducted database to determine the number of Fulani in the state towards better planning.

Speaking, the commissioner for communication, Mrs Bola Olojoku, who hosted the event, said it was to abreast the people with the activities of the ministries and other MDAs so far.

Commissioners in the ministry of Economic Planning, Education, Health, Environment and Agriculture among other MDAs also gave their scorecard during the event.
