Senate leader lauded for sponsoring Osun agric varsity bill

The Senate on Wednesday gave expeditious passage to a bill seeking the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.

In a swift session, the senators passed the bill for its first and second readings in under an hour.

The Executive Bill, sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, was the first to be treated for a second reading after being introduced along with five other bills.

Weighing in on the development, the Iragbiji Youth Association appreciated Senator Bamidele for sponsoring the bill.

In a statement, Adekunle Oyediran, National President of the association, said the proposed university will empower students with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle contemporary challenges in agriculture.

The statement said: “This initiative is not only a testament to Senator Bamidele’s dedication to advancing education in our region but also a significant milestone that promises to transform the educational landscape and provide invaluable opportunities for our youth.

“The proposed Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies is envisioned as an institution that will focus on agricultural education, research, and innovation. Given the critical importance of agriculture to Nigeria’s economy and food security, this university will serve as a vital hub for training future leaders in agricultural sciences.

“It will empower students with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle contemporary challenges in agriculture, thereby contributing to sustainable development and economic growth in our community and beyond.

“Senator Bamidele’s sponsorship of this bill reflects his understanding of the pressing need for specialized educational institutions that can cater to the unique needs of our agricultural sector. His commitment to this cause demonstrates a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes the development of human capital, which is essential for fostering innovation and improving productivity in agriculture.

“In light of this significant development, the Iragbiji Youth Association also wishes to express its appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his steadfast commitment to enhancing educational opportunities across Nigeria. We recognize that education is a cornerstone of national development, and President Tinubu’s administration has shown a clear understanding of its importance.”
