4 months after Kano LG’s election, ad hoc staff yet to be paid

Four months after the Kano state local government’s election, some of the ad hoc staff who conducted the exercise are yet to receive their pay for the assignment.

Some of the staff told Kano/Jigawa Chronicle that they had not been contacted by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) and are still waiting to receive their payment.

“We don’t know where the problem is coming from but a four months period without the payment is just long,” said Abdulhamid Isah, one of the ad hoc staff.

Kano/Jigawa Chronicle recalls that KANSIEC conducted the local government election on January 16 this year across the 44 local government areas of the state and said the state government budgeted N2.3billion for the exercise.

In March, KANSIEC chairman, Professor Garba Ibrahim Sheka, said the present economic hardship was behind the delay in payment of the ad hoc staff.

Reacting to the fresh call for the payment, KANSIEC’s Public Relations Officer, Dahiru Lawan Kofar Wambai, said the commission was aware of the situation and that the ad hoc staff were expected to be paid in this month.

“The election money is just like a budget, each segment has to be approved before money is released. So the approval is coming in series and we are coming to that of ad hoc staff, which is the last one. It is the present economic hardship that led to this delay,” he said.
