Four persons have been feared dead following a cholera outbreak in Soku, Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Residents said that the outbreak started last quarter of 2023 and worsened with recorded fatalities last December and January this year.

In the meantime, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has dispatched a ‘Rapid Response Medical Team’, made up of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to Soku town for intervention to save the lives of the citizens.

The Rivers State Representative in the Board of NDDC, Chief Tony Okocha, said, “We have moved in to mitigate the debilitating effects of the disease and ensure it no longer spreads. With open minds, you can see videos of the drugs and other medical supplies and the movement of a large crew of doctors, nurses and other medical personnel at the Abonnema Jetty en route to Soku in Akulga.”

When contacted, the spokesperson in the state’s Ministry of Health, Mrs Ednah, said she has contacted the state director of public health to get details of the incident.
