3rd edition of Table Tennis Challenge ends in Calabar

The annual Cross River Table Tennis Challenge has ended at the Indoor Sports Hall of UJ Esuene Stadium Calabar with winners in different categories taking home cash prizes.

The two-day tournament ended on December 31, 2022 and over 14 winners smiled home with over N200,000 cash prizes.

Bright Joel, Akabom Ekpo and Victor Sunday emerged as singles winners in the men’s elite category while Hope Udoaka and Vivian Ekpeyong were winners in Women’s singles.

For the Cadet singles, Daniel Ekok, Samuel Eze and Victor Daniel emerged as champions.

In the Cadet girls category, Esther Ekok, Ela Ogabu and Precious Edem emerged as winners just as the singles prizes in the boys junior category were won by Victor Edem, Jim Victory and Sylvanus Irukwu.

The third edition of the championship was staged in collaboration with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Cross River State Chapter.

The Vice Chairman of Cross River State Table Tennis Association, Usen Umoh, also said the state is lucky to have produced an international table tennis player like Offiong Edem who represented Nigeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

One of the sponsors, Michael Asim Ita, said the aim of the tournament is to discover budding talents at the grassroots and to consolidate the popularity of table tennis in the state.

“I commend the Cross River Table Tennis Association for producing national and international players.

“We aim to further popularise the game and encourage everyone to play table tennis for physical well being and to encourage sports loving individuals and the organised private sector to invest in sports as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),” he said.
