The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army said that it destroyed about 233 illegal refineries across the Niger Delta region in 2023.

The GOC, 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdusalam, who disclosed this at the Division’s combined West Africa Social Activities (WASA), said that over 1,112 arrests were made while about 1,111,900 liters of illegally refined products, 72 trucks/vehicles, and over 356 arms were confiscated last year.

Abdulssalam said the aims and objectives of the West Africa Social Activities, WASA, was in line with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Toareed Lagbaja’s command philosophy.

The GOC reassured residents and the business community that an enabling environment will be provided continually for seamless oil production in the Niger Delta region.

“About 233 illegal refineries were destroyed across Niger Delta region, over 1,112 arrests were made while about 1,111,900 litres of illegally refined products, 72 trucks/vehicles, and over 356 arms were confiscated last year.

WASA was meant to strengthen social relationships among officers, soldiers, and their families.

It also provides an avenue for informal social interaction and a forum for the barracks community to showcase its rich and diverse cultural heritage.

“Additionally, it is an event that marks the end of an eventful training year while heralding the beginning of a new year,” he stated.

He pointed out that the 2023 training exercises were all successfully completed with huge gains, stressing that the annual Exercise STILL WATERS III, had gone a long way in curtailing criminal activities in the Niger Delta.

Rivers State Governor, Similanayi Fubara, in his speech called for the civilian-military cooperation, saying it would go a long way to foster and strengthen a healthy society like Nigeria.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the governor noted that the ideals of WASA in strengthening regimentation and promotion of family values in the Nigerian Army were enormous.
