Zungeru district head, 2 wives abducted in Niger

Armed men have abducted the district head of Zungeru in Niger state and his two wives on Sunday.

Mustapha Madaki (Madakin Zungeru) and his wives were taken past noon on Sunday after gunmen numbering around 20 stormed their home in the heart of Zungeru.

The armed men parked their motorcycles some 500m away before moving into the area on foot.

They made straight for the house and took the district head from the room of one of his wives, Habiba.

The second wife was also abducted in an operation neighbours said lasted half an hour, without any resistance.

This latest abduction is coming exactly one week after 163 children of Salihu Tanko Islamic school in Tegina, Rafi local government area of the state were kidnapped and are still being held captive by their abductors.

Zungeru is 30km from Tegina, and hosts a 700MW hydroelectricity dam under construction.

It has also been reported that CNEEC-Sino, the firm handling the construction, has abandoned the site over security concerns.

One outlet says expatriates working at the site were evacuated on Saturday morning and escorted out of the state under heavy security hours before the abduction of Madaki.
