More governors-elect yesterday received their certificates of return promising better deals for the citizens of their respective states.

They are: Babagana Zulum (Borno), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto (Sokoto), Dikko Umar Radda (Katsina) and Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos) and Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe)

Re-elected Borno State governor Zulum has promised to do more in the areas of security, agriculture, food security, job creation and empowerment during his second term in office.

Zulum, who made the commitment after receiving his certificate of return at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim College of Education in Maiduguri, also told state and federal legislators-elect that they don’t have the luxury of time, saying: “As from tomorrow we should start working.”

Assuring the people of Borno of his efforts to work hundred per cent for the benefit of the citizens and residents, irrespective of ethnic or religious differences, Zulum said: “During the last four years, we have made tremendous effort to ensure peace and stability in Borno State.”

He also promised to do more, especially in the areas of agriculture, food security, job creation, youth and women empowerment, urban renewal, flood prevention and most importantly “our crusade for rehabilitation and resettlement.”

Zulum also asked for forgiveness from the members of opposition parties, who had participated in the contest, if they were hurt by statements made by his supporters in the heat of electioneering campaigns.

I will hit the ground running—Plateau’s Mutfwang

On his part, the governor-elect for Plateau State, Mutfwang has said he will hit the ground running in accordance with the people’s aspirations immediately after he is sworn into office on May 29.

After receiving his certificate of return from the INEC, Mutfwang said: “There are so much expectations from the people that gave me this mandate and I am duty bound to meet their hopes and aspirations soon after May 29.

“There is no time to waste because we have to return the state to the path of growth and development, which was truncated by the outgoing All Progressives Congress (APC). This means I am going to start from where PDP left in 2015.

“To develop Plateau on the fast lane, I plead with all those who contested with me to join hands with me believing that you have a genuine development blueprint for Plateau people.

“The presentation of the certificate of return marked the end of the election process and I use this opportunity to assure Plateau people that I will never let them down. I will not take this mandate for granted,” said Mutfwang”

Sokoto extends olive branch to opposition

Sokoto State governor-elect, Aliyu Sokoto, after receiving his certificate of return, solicited the support of opposition parties in order to bring the state back on course.

He said: “This victory is not for me alone; it is for the entire people of Sokoto State who voted for change. I am therefore appealing to members of the opposition parties to join hands with me to take our dear state to greater height. Let us bring our state back on course for the good of all,” he pleaded.

Katsina’s Radda: I’ll deliver on my promises

In Katsina, Radda has assured the people that he will deliver on the promises made to them and the promises made to God.

After receiving his certificate of return, Radda said: “We require your prayers and support to be able to deliver all the promises,” promising to extend a hand of friendship to opposition parties with the view to moving the state forward.

Some residents of Katsina State expressed their expectations of the incoming administration.

Alhaji Abdurrazaq Al-Mustapha Banye, said he expected a replica of the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua administration in the state.

“I know Dikko Radda and his capacity; I know what he can do and what he cannot do. I therefore expect very good governance similar to that of the late Umaru Musa in Katsina State,” he said.

I’ll continue to deliver dividends in Ogun – Gov Abiodun

On his part, Governor Abiodun of Ogun State yesterday vowed that his administration would continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the residents of the state by focusing on people’s oriented programmes and policies.

Shortly after receiving his certificate of return, Abiodun said his re-election was an opportunity to continue to take dividends of democracy to the nooks and crannies of the state.

“The people came out in their thousands to exercise their franchise. This election proclaims a renewed dedication to the vision of this administration. It is a call for a new hope to Ogun and the entire Nigeria,” he said.

Niger’s Bago promises to tackle security challenges, improve IGR

Niger State governor-elect, Mohammed Bago has promised to deal decisively with security challenges facing the state.

Speaking after he was presented with the certificate of return, Bago said he would also work hard to improve on the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state and create opportunities that would improve the economy and wellbeing of citizens.

He said his administration would leave doors open for criticisms of his ideas, saying “I recognise the task ahead from security challenges to youth restiveness and we would not rest until we achieve our plans. We shall also prioritise education and affordable primary healthcare. We are here for both the supporters and the critics.”

Gombe gov: ‘No victor, no vanquished’

In Gombe, Governor Yahaya yesterday said his victory is for all the indigenes and residents of the state, describing the certificate as a licence to do more and deliver on the mandate given to him by the electorate.

He said his re-election was an opportunity to consolidate on the gains of his first administration towards meeting the needs of his people.

While expressing gratitude to the people of the state for their support and peaceful conduct throughout the process, Inuwa praised INEC for its innovation to ensure free and fair elections.

Sanwo-Olu promises to complete ongoing projects

Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State yesterday extended a hand of fellowship to fellow contestants in the March 18 election, appealing to them to join hands with him in the task of building a greater and better Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu who received his certificate of return for the second and final term said: “I want to seize this opportunity to once again extend our hands of fellowship to all our fellow contestants for us to join hands to build a better Lagos of our dreams.

“We will never forget that we are Lagosians first and foremost, united by ideas that the mega city of our status embodies. We are hardworking, we are tolerant, we have a lot of diversity amongst us. We are innovative with a lot of energies and we have an uncanny quest for excellence.

“We have made promises, indeed we have also delivered on so many of these promises.

In the last few months, you have seen a lot of communications around what we have been able to modestly accomplish in the last almost four years now in line with our THEMES agenda, he said.”

Meanwhile, the Governor-elect, Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, said ARISE agenda will be the basis of his government.

“Today is a day of good tidings in Akwa Ibom. Even those that didn’t support us made us to work. If you got this without a contest, then you would not appreciate what you got. 

“The contest showed you the enormity of what God is about doing in your life. So you need to celebrate those people that contested with you, so there is no fear whatever,” he stated. 

The Governor-elect said the concept of ‘happy hour’ was to celebrate and promote tourism in the state, noting that rest and recreation was part of life. 

“I am from the tourism sector, so we want to promote tourism in Akwa Ibom. Rest and recreation is part of happy hour. There is no human being that can work all through his life. So in Akwa Ibom, we work hard, we rest well,” he stated.
