Zulum gives irrigation packs to 2,000 resettled farmers

The Borno State governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has distributed packages containing varieties of agricultural tools and implements to over 2,000 farmers for dry season farming activities.

The governor donated the materials on Friday when he visited Damasak, the headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area in northern Borno.

Each pack consists of a water pump with accessories, NPK fertiliser, non-selective herbicides, 50,000 liters of petrol, 2,000 liters of engine oil and rice seedlings.

The benefitting farmers, who were resettled after their displacement from parts of Mobbar Local Government Area, also include those from neighbouring Abadam Local Government Area, which is under reconstruction ahead of safe resettlement.

The governor was accompanied on the visit by the senator representing Borno North, Abubakar Kyari and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, AbdulKarim Lawan.

He said the intervention was part of sustained efforts to create jobs, revive and boost irrigation farming towards the recovery of agriculture and food sufficiency in the state.

In addition to distributing the irrigation packs, Governor Zulum directed the release of funds for the construction of 500 tube-well boreholes to increase access to water for irrigation activities.

The water project valued at N450m has a combined capacity of producing 950,000 liters of water with three deep aquifers, and two middle aquifer water sources with reticulation pipelines to connect townships.
