The National Leader of Darul Islam sect, Sheikh Basheer Abdullahi Sulaiman, has said the recent arrest of 10 members of the sect in Zaria was a violation of the agreement entered between the federal government and the sect seven years ago.
Speaking to Daily Trust in Kano yesterday, Sheikh Abdullahi reiterated that the 10 people arrested by the police in Dogarawa, Sabon Gari Zaria were members of Darul Islam, not Boko Haram, as acclaimed by the police.
Abdullahi said that for the 16 years of the existence of Darul Islam in Nigeria, its members had no record of violence anywhere in the world, and that since the sacking of Darul Islam village in Niger state in 2009, the sect had maintained its side of the agreement by encouraging its members to maintain peace.
He said, “When I got the information that eight of our members were arrested in Zaria, though I was not contacted by the security agents, as a leader, I sent someone to verify what their offences were. To my utmost surprise, the person I sent was detained and I sent another one only for us to read in the papers that 10 Boko Haram suspects had been arrested in Zaria.”
He urged the Nigerian authorities to treat his people with equity and justice, and appealed to the authorities to desist from taking actions based on speculations, stressing, “We are peace loving people. We plead for our member’s release as they have nothing to do with what the authorities thought they were.”
The police authorities in Kaduna state had last week announced the arrest of 10 suspected members of Boko Haram sect in Dogarawa Sabon Gari, Zaria Local government area of the state.
