Yuletide: FRSC tasks road users on safety

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has called on road users across the country to be conscious of their safety while on the highways during this festive period, urging the travelers to always patronize buses in the parks rather than the roadside on-the-move vehicles for personal security.

He gave the charge in Kano in a keynote address at the flag-off ceremony of the 2018 ember month campaign organized by the corps to sensitise drivers and other road users on basic traffic rules and regulations with a view to reducing crashes on the highways.

Oyeyemi who was represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer RS1HQ Kaduna, Assistant Corps Mashal Obayemi Omiyale warned drivers against reckless driving, as well as driving under the influence of drug or alcohol, urging passengers to always try to understand the mental condition of their drivers so that their safety is not jeopardized.

He said “This is a period of electioneering, and during this period things do happen, accidents do occur as a result of overloading, as a result of people hanging carelessly through the windows of vehicles during campaign rallies and as a result of over speeding and driving under the influence of drug and alcohol. I therefore urge all and sundry to ensure that we are driven safely no matter the type of vehicle we are in.”

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje lauded the commitment of the corps to mitigating road crashes and accompanying loss of lives and properties on the highways, blaming poor driving culture among the road users for the menace.
He expressed optimism that through constant sensitization and advocacy driving culture of Nigerians would change thereby eliminating frequent accidents on the highways.

Earlier in his speech the Kano state Sector Commander, CC Yusuf Garba called for attitudinal change by drivers for a safer motoring environment to be achieved where lives and properties would be preserved.

The emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II was represented at the occasion by Alhaji Muntari Kwaru who stood in for Ciroman Kano, Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero.
